You will often hear websites being described as a digital shop window and there is real truth in this but if you want to make your business really successful online it needs to do more than just showcase what you sell. People live busy lives they haven’t got the time or energy to waste time wading through your website to work out if you have what they need. They want to know immediately when they land on your website who you are, what you do and who you help.
You want your website to guide your visitors to take action. Cold audiences (people who have not come into contact with you before), might not be ready to let go of their well-earned cash on their first visit so this is where you can present a clear offer on the landing page and engage them with something very tempting.
This could be free advice, a free discovery call, signing up for a newsletter, a discount… what you offer will depend on your business and what your ideal clients needs. The idea of this is to show your value, help them in some way and give them the opportunity to know, like and trust you. If you create a system that the visitor gives you their email address in exchange for this offer then you have a way to build a relationship with them.
Once again this comes back to the reality that your visitors do not have a lot of time to lurk around your website. You want to consider the most important information that you want to share and place this above the fold. By this we mean on the top section of a website page so that your visitors don’t even have to scroll down.
If you have impressed the visitor enough in the first 30 seconds of their visit then it is likely that they will invest some of their time to explore your website. What they gain from this will help them make a decision about purchases so you want to impress. This is your opportunity to really connect, show them you understand what they need and position yourself as an expert in your field. You can communicate the values of your business and share information, advice and support that will help your ideal client and show your worth.
A great way to communicate all of these complex messages is to write a blog and/ or create a video series that your visitor can engage with to get to know you better. The added bonus of a blog is it will increase your SEO rankings and get you more visible in search engines. Both videos and blogs also give you content to share on social media channels which will drive traffic to your site.
A contact form is an easy and effective way to make connection easy. The customer will see the tab to contact you clearly and then their message can be sent to your email inbox so you can respond as soon as possible.
Every step of the journey should be easy, your website visitors should be able to arrive at your site know who you are and how you can help them. They should be able to see your offers, get to know you and easily contact you.
